WHAT IS TELETHERAPY

According to PositivePsychology, “Teletherapy, also known as online therapy, e-therapy, or video therapy, is therapy delivered through a virtual platform via a computer. If you’ve ever used FaceTime or Skype, it’s essentially the same thing – except more secure and with a qualified therapist or counselor at the other end instead of a distant friend or relative.”

As of March 17, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights, which enforces the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), said it would not impose penalize covered providers for noncompliance with the HIPAA rules that relate to the provision of telehealth services during the Coronavirus pandemic. This act states is that a provider who needs to provide teletherapy services to their patients during this time may use platforms that would otherwise not be HIPAA-compliant, such as Zoom or FaceTime.

Research studies indicate that telemental health is equivalent to face-to-face care in various settings, and is an acceptable alternative. While we across the state of California are dealing with an inability to meet in-person, teletherapy can be a wonderful option if you are looking for an outlet and.or support during this trying time.
